I was under the impression that the statue was not Netjer all the time, but was being made a suitable container for Netjer to manifest within whenever Netjer might choose to do so; you had to treat it with deference all the time because there was no guarantee that you would be given clear evidence of Netjer's presence in or absence from the statue at any given time, and you sure could cause offense by making assumptions.
The statue is not always Netjer, but Netjer may always exercise the choice to be the statue.
"Sometimes it's the flesh of Jesus and sometimes it's not" doesn't seem like a desireable concept in the ritual role the the communion bread and wine play.
