Isidore was already a saint and a doctor of the Church (see here for details).
He wrote one of the first encyclopedias and was extremely fond of gathering and organizing data into complicated schemas. All this back in the seventh century!
In 1999, somebody or another petitioned the Vatican to "assign" a patron saint for computers and the internet, and whatever bureaucracy deals with that sort of thing thought Isidore fit the bill.
