I get very little news when not online, as I own no television and the only one in the flat is in Michaela's room.

So the first I heard was the BBC clip of the Mayor of New Orleans ordering the evacuation.

My heart goes out to those people. The newspaper this morning said there could be a million homeless. If (when?) the levies break, the standing water will be at least two stories high.

I cannot even imagine how many decades it will take to repair the damage. I shudder to think of the deaths.

Today is the Memorial of the Beheading of John the Baptist. My heart takes this as a bad omen. But then, I'm a bit of a pessimist that way.

God help them.

In other news, the worst of my illness seems to have passed. Fever's down, though my rather vivid (and horrible) fever dreams continued last night. And I had a moment yesterday when my kidneys started acting up, but it was nothing a gallon or so of water couldn't cure.

glad you're feeling better... I used to be able to shrug off an illness when I was younger, but no more. Now it just hits me like a freight train.

I guess I'm officially old. Or my body is, anyway. ;)

My husband just turned on the TV, there was an image of a reporter crawling on his hands and knees on Church Street in *I guess* New Orleans.. is stuff like that really necessary? I mean, really...?

I do hope the storm passes without too much damage, to property and to people. *fingers crossed - it probably won't help but can't hurt at this point* These are times when prayers are called for..

I think they're busy praying to the Voodoun Orisha and Loa.

Well, your mileage may vary...

I don't doubt that the Loa are getting an earful at the moment.

I note in passing, however, that Louisiana is the only State where "parish" is an official subdivision of a county.

Louisiana being the only state where "parish" is an official subdivision of a county... kind of makes sense, seeing as the Vodoun faith is part Catholic.

Just an FYI out that there is an LJ user that has decided not to leave New Orleans, and is providing web-feeds of the damage and looting that is happening in the French Quarter:

"We're seriously considering trying to restore some order to this city since the government has totally given up (and probably couldn't do anything anyway). The police have been looting according to reports, and the honest ones are under siege at their precincts as automatic gunfire was unloaded at one near the Quarter."

He's someone that works in the data center of Something Awful, I believe.
