The Professor!

From the Tolkien Society:

On the 3^rd January 1892 JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. To celebrate this event, on this day each year Tolkien fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author.

The toast is "The Professor".

For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies:

To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words ‘The Professor’ before taking a sip (or swig, if that’s more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.

My coworker and I just did this, toasting our work copy of Return of the King on extended DVD.

Pony and I just watched the full extended edition of all the LOTR movies over the holiday (all 13 or so hours). I just re-read the book again as well (I do at least once a year).

As I don't drink alcohol, I think I will do something appropriate, and I'll be toasting the professor with a pipefull of "Middle Earth Blend" pipeweed. (I also have an almost empty tin of Frogmorton to finish off. :) )
