Dear friends, this being the feast of St. Isidore of Seville (the patron saint of the internet), I thought perhaps I'd open with a short quote.

If a man wants to be always in God's company, he must pray regularly and read regularly. When we pray, we talk to God; when we read, God talks to us. All spiritual growth comes from reading and reflection. (Maxims of St. Isidore, circa 620AD)

As an aside, I find the idea that a bishop was named "Isidore" roughly as amusing as one named "Thorsson" or "Jovian".

Sunday we attended the wedding of John Scott Tynes and Jennifer Scott Tynes (as I suppose I must now call them). It was held in an amazing old mansion in Seattle.

It was wonderful to meet [livejournal.com profile] ktynes, [livejournal.com profile] nallasenyt, [livejournal.com profile] iamnikchick, and so many sans LJ. It was also quite nice to catch up with some old friends. I only wish there had been more time.

Yesterday while [livejournal.com profile] jaynefury headed off to work, I had breakfast with Messers Scott Glancy and Andrew Migliore. Homland Security would no doubt be apalled at our lack of patriotism unquestioning obedience. Andrew was nice enough to give me a ride back to Tacoma.

I don't know if you've heard, but a number of Catholic bishops have come out very strongly against the new immigration "reform". The statement released by our own archbishop was essentially a call to civil disobedience. Huzzah!

Finally, a silly meme...

So what are the bishops saying about the amnesty or criminality thing? There are so many versions even with the GOP that I don't know which one people are talking about.

Criminality

Tulsa Bishop Edward Slattery said most succinctly that if a law is passed criminalizing the act of aiding illegal immigrants "then I will become a criminal".

I love St. Isidore. He's helped me out two times. Once, when I moved up here, I didn't have a dime. My computer finally arrived at the place I refer to as "The Shithole" (which involved a psychotic landlord and one of the slumhouses the university district is famous for), and a stick of RAM had fallen out during transport. So I popped off a quick prayer to him, put it in, thinking the RAM would be toast, and it booted fine.

Second time, my hard drive went. Went as in the part with the partition table (block 0) was toast. This drive was dead. I had stuff on it i hadn't backed up. So when the new drive came, I popped the old drive in, again, asked St. Isidore's intercession. it failed the BIOS check, but somehow I was able to mount it with no problem and pull data off. Logically I know I shouldn't have been able to, with no partition table and all...

But much thanks to St. Isidore. :)

It was great to finally meet you two in person. One of these days I'd like to have an extended conversation in more relaxed atmosphere.

Love that photo of Diane and Christine!

Patron Saint of the Internet?

Not trying to be cheeky here, I really am curious.

How is it someone got named patron saint of the internet? In what way were they martyred for the internet? Isn't there a bunch of specifics that have to be met to become a saint? i.e. no body rot after so much time has passed. If so, has enough time gone by since the start of the internet for someone to have not only been martyred for the internet but for their body to have been interred then examined for decay?

I repeat, I am not being snarky or mocking. I would like to know. :)

Not quite the way it works.

Isidore was already a saint and a doctor of the Church (see here for details).

He wrote one of the first encyclopedias and was extremely fond of gathering and organizing data into complicated schemas. All this back in the seventh century!

In 1999, somebody or another petitioned the Vatican to "assign" a patron saint for computers and the internet, and whatever bureaucracy deals with that sort of thing thought Isidore fit the bill.

Also in Spanish the internet was called "El Mundio Rojo" or "The Red World". Interpret at you will.
